Day at the Dump

Day at the Dump

Take part in our eye-opening tour of a working landfill site which includes:

  • Landfill tipping-face: See where your rubbish goes and what happens after the rubbish lorries have dumped it here.

  • Weighbridge: Find out why lorries are wighed when the enter and leave the site, how much they weigh and how many drop off rubbish each day.

  • Large-scale composting facility: Find out how garden waste is recycled, with the help of some teeny-tiny creatures.

  • 'Rubbish juice' treatment works: See what 'juices' come out of our rubbish and the importance of cleaning it all up.

  • Electricity generators: Find out how we put the gases coming out of the landfill site to good use by using them to generate electricity!

  • Capped landfill: See how much wildlife you can spot living in the nature reserve that is now on top of the old landfill!

  • Waste Tunnel: View a slice through the capped landfill and experience the history of waste on our site from the 1970’s until the present day.

Due to the large size of the landfill site it may be necessary to use your coach for part of the tour, please discuss this with a member of our team when making your booking.

If you are able to spend at least 4 hours at Carymoor, you can complete your day with an interactive activity from the following choices:

For Key Stage 1:

Talking Rubbish: Reinforce learning with some fun games linked to each of the 3 Rs, including: Reduce 'snap', a Re-use team challenge, a Recycling relay race and the 'what's it made of?' game.

Wigglebert Worm and Friends: Discover how to make and use compost with the help of Wigglebert and his wiggly friends, plus plant up your own compost character to take home!

Energy Explorers: Find out the basics about energy: how do we use it, where does it come from, and what problems are associated with fossil fuels? Then have a go at a hands-on team challenge: can you use the sun or wind to power a bulb, buzzer or motor (weather dependent)?!

For Key Stage 2:

Slumming it! Global Citizens: Visit our replica shanty town based on Kroo Bay in Sierra Leone and experience what it’s like to live in a house made from rubbish.

Trash to Treasure: Transform some of your own waste into treasure to take home: Choose either plastic bag kites, plastic bottle windmills or juice carton wallets.
