Our Schools Against Waste team are helping to promote the rollout of the new 'Recyle More' service from Somerset Council which started in autumn 2020 and allows more items to be recycled from the kerbside.
We can offer Somerset primary schools either a virtual visit (via Teams or Zoom) or a physical visit with a member of the Schools Against Waste team coming into school. Both options are FREE and include a half day of activities to help raise awareness amongst children and staff, encouraging everyone to practise the 3Rs - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Our virtual sessions, as well as being thought-provoking and interactive, also save carbon and fuel, so do consider this option for your school. You can read some great feedback from schools we have worked with below.
Including an assembly and 2 x 1-hour Curriculum linked workshops. For details of our workshops please see the links below.
This will introduce the children to the ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ message and explain the new Recycle More service. *If this is a virtual session, we will provide a link for the session so that all of your classes can join the virtual assembly.
Curriculum linked workshops
Looking at materials, their properties and how we use and re-use them. Workshops are for one class at a time.
All of our sessions will be practical and fun, giving children a better understanding of waste and recycling issues.
“This programme is a great way of teaching even very young children about recycling and inspiring them that they can take action to make a difference. Their enthusiasm and knowledge then gets taken home and, hopefully spread through their families and community. It is hugely important that the next generation has this input and gets into good habits as young citizens. Thank you.” Dunster First School, 06/04/2022

In addition to the workshops we can also spend time with school staff to review current recycling facilities and see where improvements can be made. We can provide practical advice and help.

The Schools Against Waste project is FREE thanks to funding from Somerset Council and Suez.
We can extend your session to a full day so we can work with more classes or cover more workshops if required. The cost for the additional half day is £80.
Whether that's the odd hour, a regular day or even a longer work experience placement, your time is very valuable to us. Our growing team of volunteers makes a vital contribution both at the centre and at events across the county.
