Schools Against Waste

From October 2020, Somerset Waste Partnership is introducing the new ‘Recycle More’ service, a new recycling service for Somerset, allowing people to recycle more from their kerbside every week. Recycle More will be introduced in four phases over around 18 months. The rollout started in Mendip in October 2020.

The Schools Against Waste team will be visiting schools alongside the rollout of the new service, which started with Mendip schools in autumn 2020, and South Somerset schools in summer 2021. From September 2021 we will be visiting schools in the former Taunton Deane district.

We will contact your school when the new service comes to your area and can offer your school a virtual school visit, featuring a half day of activities to help raise awareness amongst children and staff.

We hope to be able to offer physical visits too once restrictions are lifted.

What we can offer:

A free virtual half day visit - including an assembly and 2 x 1-hour Curriculum linked workshops.

Practical advice and support to help your school waste less and recycle more.

All of our sessions are linked to the curriculum and will be practical and fun, giving children a better understanding of waste and recycling issues.

Whole school assembly:

Our Talking Rubbish assembly will introduce the ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ message and explain the new Recycle More service.

We will provide a link for the session so that all of your classes can join the virtual assembly.

We can then offer a choice of 2 workshops to follow the assembly.

Workshops – KS1

3Rs workshop

Slim My Waste

Children develop an understanding of the range of resources consumed to supply us with food (e.g. fuel, energy, water, packaging materials) and the impact this can have on the environment. Children will learn how to reduce, reuse, and recycle food waste.

We also have a fantastic food waste resource pack, full of ideas and activities to run in school. You can download our Food Waste Education Pack for KS2 at the bottom of this page.

Fantastic Plastic

In this session children will explore the impact of plastics on our environment and consider alternatives. The session highlights the additional plastics that can be recycled through Recycle More.
