Carymoor Environmental Trust

Inset Day Outdoor learning training

Come to us for your INSET this year and make it a day to remember! Our stunning environmental centre is the perfect place to bring your team for a day of inspiring INSET activities surrounded by our wonderful nature reserve. Use the centre for you own INSET activities in the morning, and then let one of our staff members lead a half day on learning beyond the classroom or devote a whole day to learning about the opportunities the outdoors provides for learning across the curriculum.

We can offer;

A Half Day or Full Day INSET on learning beyond the classroom will both cover:

Warm up games

Philosophy, research, and principles of outdoor learning…in a nutshell!

A quick evaluation of the experiential/ outdoor learning that you do at your school already.

Time to reflect on where you will take you outdoor learning next.

If doing a half day INSET on learning beyond the classroom, choose one option from the following…if doing a full day, choose three from the following;

1. Outdoor Creative

‘Creativity is as important as Literacy’ Sir Ken Robinson.

Learning outdoors allows for risk taking, removes some of the risk of failure and therefore helps to increase creativity. Experience for yourself taking risks to find solutions to challenges, creating art, and enjoying music outdoors.

2. Outdoor Literacy

Sneezy the Dragon has terrible hay fever and it’s causing lots of problems for the Trogglets of Nightingale Woods. See how we pack literacy objectives into this magical session.

3. Outdoor Numeracy

Maths can be noisier and messier outdoors…and a fully hands on experience. Explore and share ideas for teaching numeracy outdoors, including map skills, coordinates and bearings, mathematical challenges, sorting and categorising, estimating and measuring, angles, shape, time and measuring length and weight.

4. Outdoor Science

Find out how we bring science to life at Carymoor, experiencing for yourselves a range of hands-on activities that help students to explore the range of habitats on site.

5. Outdoor Skills

Develop confidence using outdoor skills such as fire lighting and using a Kelly Kettle, knot tying and using tools such as a bow saw, loppers and whittling knife safely. This includes looking at Site Risk Assessments and Risk Benefit Assessments for the activities above.

6. Visit our Forest School site

Visit Nightingale Woods and experience a mini Forest School session…we’ll share some of our favourite games, songs and woodland activities with you.

7. Idea Development Challenge

Bring a selection of books that you will be using this next term in school. Together we will think of ways that you could take learning beyond the classroom, using these books as a starting point.
