A Day at the Dump

A Day at the Dump

Only when you see the sheer enormity of it with your own eyes can you fully comprehend the importance of becoming sustainable

Carymoor is about much more than just rubbish, we want to show your students the BIG picture and how we all need to work together to create a sustainable future.  Depending on your topic of study and age group we can switch the emphasis to include different aspects of the tour.

On your trip we will visit the Waste Transfer Station at Dimmer and see where household waste is bulked up before it is transported to an Energy from Waste facility.  Only when you see the sheer enormity of it with your own eyes can you fully comprehend the importance of being sustainable.  Along the tour we stop to investigate:

  • Biotechnology - the use of micro-organisms to treat polluted water, created by the landfill waste, at the leachate treatment works
  • Energy from Waste – reducing air pollution and global warming by capturing methane gas to fuel a 3 MW electric power-generator which provides energy to the national grid
  • Recycling – the production of a recycled compost from garden waste
  • Citizenship – a visit to the weighbridge helps to explain the amount of rubbish entering the site and who pays the price
