Students celebrate DofE success at Carymoor

Today, Year 9 students from King Arthur’s School celebrated completing their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award at Carymoor Environmental Trust. The group was joined by Nicola Gething, Deputy Lieutenant of Somerset, and Janet Montgomery from the High Sheriff of Somerset’s Trust.

Since October, Carymoor has hosted two groups of students as part of the programme. During their time on site, they have taken part in nature conservation work on the reserve, learned map reading skills, and developed a wide range of practical craft abilities.

The programme provides a valuable alternative learning environment, supporting students who may not always thrive in a traditional classroom setting.

At the final presentation, it was clear how much the students had gained, with many highlighting new friendships, improved teamwork, and increased confidence.

Carymoor’s Volunteer Co-ordinator, Chrissie Stacey, said: “At the start of the programme, some of the students would struggle to make a cup of tea. By the end, they had successfully completed a two-day expedition—cooking for themselves and navigating a 15-mile route using a map. It has been fantastic to work with them and see how much they have progressed.”

Carymoor works closely with Somerset Council’s Duke of Edinburgh team, who provide ongoing support and guidance for the programme. We’re also grateful to the South Somerset 14-19 Partnership and the High Sheriff’s Charitable Trust who helped to fund the groups

Feedback

  • “This programme is a great way of teaching even very young children about recycling and inspiring them that they can take action to make a difference. Their enthusiasm and knowledge then gets taken home and, hopefully spread through their families and community. It is hugely important that the next generation has this input and gets into good habits as young citizens. Thank you.”

  • I was so impressed with what I had made and really inspired to work more with willow and make more baskets. I haven’t felt this motivated to craft in years!

  • We had a superb day, Natalie was very accommodating with our timetable as we arrived late. We started with the hunter gatherer games to burn off some post coach energy. We loved dressing up and examining the artefacts. The children absolutely loved the quern stones, fire lighting and shelter building. Nothing but positive things to say. Staff and volunteers amazing - thank you.
