Over 95% of the schools in Somerset have been 'Waking up to Waste' with the Somerset Waste Action Programme

The Somerset Waste Action Programme (SWAP) has been working with Somerset schools for four years now, helping schools to 'Reduce, Reuse and Recycle' their waste. From having awareness raising assemblies to composting their organic waste there are many ways to make a difference in school. Here are some of the ways SWAP can help:

FREE WORKSHOPS! SWAP offer a variety of free workshops and assemblies that are tailored to the National Curriculum. We can offer primary schools 4 free visits per academic year and up to 8 visits for secondary schools. Our visits don't create any extra work for teachers and are hands on and fun. To book a visit simply call us on 01963 351350 or e-mail us at rf.swap@carymoor.org.uk

FREE COMPOST BINS! We can also offer schools up to 3 FREE compost bins! Get in touch if you would like one. For some more general advice on composting please click here for our schools composting advice information sheet.

TAKE THE PLEDGE! SWAP has a range of longer term challenges and awards for schools with the SWAP Pledge. Schools can work through our bronze, silver and gold awards, starting with easier tasks such as setting up paper reuse trays and using a compost bin through to setting up an environment group and buying recycled products. For full details please see our school pack or contact us for more details.

PAPER RECYCLING! We can liaise on your school's behalf with the district council to set up a kerbside collection. Your local district council should be able to provide some recycling boxes for a regular collection. Drop us a line to find out more.

WIN MONEY! SWAP runs an annual competition for primary and middle schools. You can find out more about it on our news page.

Take the SWAP Pledge and Reduce, Reuse and Recycle more!

The Pledge Award Scheme was set up in 2004 and is an opportunity for schools to take advantage of the services offered from the Somerset Waste Action Programme and to keep the enthusiasm going after the team have visited your school.

Schools can work towards a Bronze and Silver Award and then aim for the prestigious Golden Wilbur Waste Award. This will demonstrate that your school has achieved the highest standards in reducing, reusing and recycling its waste. Over 100 schools have won an award so far!

To see which schools have won awards please click here.

The SWAP team produce a regular quarterly newsletter with information on their recent activities in schools, update on Pledge Award achievements and recycling tips.

Make sure your school is not left out. Why not write to us and tell us what you've been up to on the issue of waste? E-mail SWAP Newsletter to be included in the next edition. You can download the primary Spring 06 newsletter here.
