Lifting the lid on green issues

This is the learning experience where the National Curriculum meets the real world, not a museum piece, not a lifeless demonstration, but industry and conservation working in harmony.

Identifying sustainability as the key to protection of the environment, the innovative centre based on restored landfill in the heart of South Somerset offers much to stimulate enquiring young minds.

The visitor centre itself is a working example of all things sustainable, including compost loos to reedbed filtration, recycled newspaper as insulation, reclaimed features and green timber frame, lime plaster, heating by reject compost and waste wood, rainwater harvesting and minimal use of processed materials. Detailed for the grounds surrounding the Visitor centre are demonstrations of wind and solar power, complemented by sensory and wildlife gardens.

With geography and science units providing the crux of experiences offered onsite, Carymoor accesses a range of technologies and land management practices to highlight both waste minimisation and sustainable use of resources. A tour of the site encompasses demonstration of aerobic digestion and windpump propulsion of leachate, NFF electricity generation on site from methane gas, the Materials Recycling Centre and a commercial composting operation. These are the technologies associated with the working landfill site.
