The Weather for April 2007
Warm, sunny and dry. In the first three weeks of April there was only 0.6mm - a barely detectable amount - on the 13th. There were five days of rain towards the end of the month, but only on the 23rd did we get enough rain to water the garden. With a total of only 11.4mm this one came near to being the driest April in 40 years - only April '76 (8.2mm) and '84 (2.9mm) were drier. This was caused by the high pressure normally sitting between the Azores and Brittany being shifted northward to centre on us, leaving Spain and the Mediterranean with an appallingly cold, wet and windy spring. Our usual mean April temperature (the average of the maximum day and minimum night readings) is around 9°C. This year was 12°, a degree warmer than the national average, itself an all-time record. This was in spite of three nights of ground frost and many nights below 5. The days were consistently warm, with several above 20°. On the first of May there was no sign of the drought breaking. Though the grass is still green gardeners will have problems if we don't get rain within a week or so.
