Our Tuesday midweek volunteer group is thriving, with a small core of loyal regulars and a 'passing trade' in students and those temporarily between jobs. In one recent case a volunteer joined us one week, got talking to another volunteer about the local business the family ran, and left the following week to start work with them!

In addition to offering job opportunities the group has been working on a number of projects on the site and within the local area. These have included planting trees and shrubs on some of the University habitat creation sites, clearing some of the excess reed mace and pond weed from two of the ponds on site, for which we were rewarded with several sightings of a kingfisher soon after, and constructing (with difficulty!) the polytunnel in our nursery area. Now that this and the raised beds are in place I have started a Thursday morning polytunnel team whose main focus will be the tree shrub and wildflower nursery we are establishing. By the autumn this group will be in a position to help with the Somerset Plant Collection project being set up here by Reading University [see research section for more information], so if anyone out there would like to become involved please let me know, we will need lots of volunteers able to spare just a little of their time!

We are currently involved with several community sites and school projects in the area and would be happy to offer assistance in the form of advice, tools loan or midweek 'muscle power' to any other community projects in the area.

If you think we may be able to help you, or you feel you can help us by joining our friendly group of volunteers who meet on Tuesdays 10 - 4pm or the polytunnel team on Thursday mornings please ring me on 01963 359309
