Hedgelaying

Hedge laying is an art that requires a degree of knowledge and skill to create an effective hedge environment. To a large extent this tradition has been replaced by mechanisation like so many other rural crafts. However, the use of traditional hedge laying techniques has a distinct advantage over the mechanised flailing method. It not only creates a low-maintenance stock proof barrier, but also encourages conservation and wildlife diversity. This hedge laying course has been specifically designed for rangers, farmers and conservationists but is open to anyone who places value on a rich and diverse environment.

The emphasis of the course is on giving individuals ample opportunity to lay a section of hedge. Tools provided will be bow saw and pruning saw. Training will not be given in the use of the traditional hedging tool, the billhook, as using one is a considerable skill which cannot be taught safely and effectively within the limitations of a one-day course. Individuals are welcome to bring along their own billhooks and use them at their own risk if they wish. Instruction for the course is provided by Jules Cross, a member of staff whose hedge laying skills have been honed through various practical courses and hands-on experience. He will provide you with an overview of the various methods and styles of hedge laying and the tools that are used.
