Weather notes

The weather for March 2010

For the first 17 days we had the "drought of March": high pressure, very light northerlies, no measurable rain (just a trace of hail), and sun nearly every day. The days were glorious, and the nights remarkably cold, even below -5°. On the 18th we were pitched into mild wet weather, with rain nearly every day, day temperatures up to12ē, and nights up to 6° or 7°. The total rainfall for the month was 49.3mm, only 70% of the average. The mean temperature was just over 6° - a degree down on last year, but much warmer than 2008, when it was only 2.2°. March is indeed a fickle month, when long-term averages mean very little. Coming after the coldest winter for about 30 years, nature is two to three weeks behind the schedule we have been used to for the past decade. Tree buds are swelling, but there is no sign of leaves yet and roadside flowers are hardly out, though I did see the first wild daffodils and Ranunculus ficaria (Celandine) on the 21st - the official start of spring.
