Nature notes - September 2009

September 2009

Wasp spiders are having a good year. In previous years we were excited to find one or two females (see News), but this year we have found 4 females with egg sacs in just a few metres of uncut grassland. The egg sac is one of the largest of any of the spiders found in Britain. It is flask shaped, brown in colour and about 25 mm across. The female fills it with eggs and then seals the top with more silk.

Go outside on a misty September morning and you can't help wondering where all the spiders have come from. Do they make more webs at this time of the year or is it just that the beads of dew make them more visible? Whatever the reason, it seems that the recent wet summers have been good for some spiders and numbers of Garden Spiders have increased.
