Nature notes - May 2009

May 2009
In common with the rest of the country, Carymoor has seen a massive invasion of painted ladies from Africa, with 74 counted on a single transect walk.

Small tortiseshells are around in good numbers and appear to have recovered from the downturn observed throughout the country last year.

Several Song Thrushes can be heard singing at Carymoor - a very welcome sound as thrushes have declined to such an extent in recent years that they are now considered a Red List species. The number of singing males in our area suggests that numbers are increasing.

The first dragonflies and damselflies are emerging. This Large Red damselfly was the first sighting, followed a day later by a Broad-bodied Chaser.
