Nature notes - March 2010

March 2010

Toads usually start waking up from hibernation around the 3rd week of February, but this year there was no sign of them until the weather changed around 18th March. Amphibians don't like cold dry weather - the warmer and wetter the better!

The first coltsfoot flowers were found on 12th March. Coltsfoot produces flowers well before the leaves appear, so much so that Pliny and many early botanists thought the leaves and flowers actually belonged to different plants, giving them two separate names.
