Nature notes - June 2009

June 2009
A pyramid orchid has appeared on the Translocated Bank for the first time, appearing amongst common spotted and bee orchids. The bank was formed from species-rich grassland stripped out from the landfill site prior to tipping and laid on an area of the clay bund around the landfill, so the orchid may have developed from seed within the stripped soil.

The 1st brood of common blues are appearing in high numbers this year, coinciding with the spread of birdsfoot trefoil across the site. Numbers recorded are the highest for at least six years.

  Azure damselflies 'tying the knot'.

Fresh marbled whites in good numbers are a welcome sight on the butterfly transects.
