On
25th August a brown hairstreak was spotted nectaring on fleabane,
only the 5th sighting of this butterfly at Carymoor since 2006. An
elusive species, it spends most of its time high in the tree canopy
or hidden within a hedgerow where the females (shown here) lay their
eggs on blackthorn. |

At
Carymoor you never know what you're going to see next! Jules Cross,
Carymoor's Reserve Officer, spotted a kingfisher fishing in our 'newt
tank' - a disused phosphorus store dating from WWII, which has filled
with rainwater. The discovery of great crested newts living in this
tank in the 90s started a chain of events which led to the establishment
of Carymoor. Fortunately the kingfisher is eating sticklebacks, not
newts! |

There
are 16 beautifully camoufaged orange-tip butterfly pupae attached
to these stems of garlic mustard Allaria petiolata. The new
adult butterflies should emerge next April-May. |
